A Hair Story Giveaway: Tell Me Why You Love Black Hair!

Hello Meltingpot Community,

As February winds down and we finish our 28 days of celebrating the 20-year anniversary of Hair Story:Untangling the Roots of Black Hair in America, my co-author, Ayana Byrd and I want to do a Hair Story giveaway. Yes, it’s technically our book’s birthday, but we want to give our fans a gift. And in the spirit of celebration, we want to give away two copies of Hair Story to two people who love Black hair.

Why We Love Black Hair

Not only do Ayana and I love our own hair, but we also love the culture, resilience and beauty of Black hair in general. We love talking about it, honoring it and celebrating all things Black hair. Even after 20 years of continuous research and writing, we are still enamored with our crowning glory. And we want other people to be as well. We didn’t write Hair Story to convince every Black woman in the world to go natural. We wrote Hair Story so Black people would fall in love with their hair and understand its power, and for non-Black people to respect and love our hair as well. If folks want to wear their hair straight, dyed purple and full of candy-colored extensions, we don’t care. As long as their decisions about their hair are based on knowledge, love and respect for their hair and not on some societal norms based on white supremacy.

Happy Birthday Hair Story
Celebrate with us, join the Hair Story Giveaway contest.

Why Do You Love Black Hair?

So, here’s how you can be entered into a drawing to win a copy of Hair Story, personally signed by both Ayana and I, and mailed directly to you. Just leave us a comment below on why you love Black hair. On Friday, February 26, after 8pmEST, we’ll pick two random winners from the comments on this post to receive a copy of the book. Simple right. We just want to continue to change the narrative about Black hair in this country, away from criticism and towards love. We want people to stop thinking of Black hair as a problem that needs to be fixed and start thinking of Black hair as a feature that should be admired. So, share the love. Tell us why you love Black hair and tell a friend to join the contest so they can also be a part of this Black hair love fest!

Give Love, Get a Book in the Hair Story Giveaway

If you aren’t following me or Ayana on Instagram, you should be, because throughout the month of February, we’re sharing our favorite quotes from the pages of Hair Story. In addition, if you haven’t listed to the MAMP podcast episode where Ayana and I take a walk down memory lane and recount how we got Hair Story from out of our heads and on to store shelves, then you should take a listen. We just love this book so much, and we’re so proud that it’s still selling and finding new fans twenty years after its release. So, share your hair story. Tell us why you love Black hair for a chance to win a copy of Hair Story in our giveaway.
