Black people deserve Black Stories

Every Month is Black History Month in My House

Hello Meltingpot Community,

It’s February. That means it’s Black history month! I’m Black. I should be happy and excited, right? Not really, because in my life, every month is Black History Month. I don’t need an artificial holiday to remind me or my children that Black people are awesome. We know that already.

Why I’m Not a Fan of Black History Month

I have written here on this blog why I’m not a fan of Black History Month because it supports the idea that Black history is somehow different than American history. It creates a false separation between “regular American history” and Black history. Black history is American history. There would be no America without Black people. That is not hyperbole, that is fact.

Every Month is Black History Month in My House

In my house, I talk about Black people so much and so often that my children regularly accuse me of having no other interests or hobbies, other than Black people. I give them the side eye when they hurl these accusations at me, but they’re not wrong. I love my people and I think we’re awesome, dare I say, exceptional even. So, yes, I force my children to read books by Black authors and watch television with Black characters and I make them learn about the Black experience in other countries. Just today my daughter tried to get me to listen to a new song she liked and to sweeten the deal she was like, “the singers are Black, mom, you’ll love them.” For the record, I did not love them, but that had nothing to do with their Blackness.

Is A Name Change in Order?

If people want to spend a month just marveling at the fabulousness of Black people, far be it from me to stop you. But at the very least, let’s change the name to better reflect that agenda. Remember, Black History Month used to be Negro History Week, so a name change is not too much to ask. Here are five snazzy suggestions for a new name for Black History Month:

Black Excellence Month

Straight and to the point, we’re celebrating examples of Black excellence, past and present.

Black People Rock Month

Another clear and concise message but with a little edge.

Black Panther
Wouldn’t it Be Cool to have an entire month devoted to worshipping Black Panther?

Black Resilience Month

Shifts the focus on how we managed to overcome the intentional and ongoing efforts to oppress and subjugate Black people in the United States.

Black Lives Matter Month

Allows us to use the entire month to focus on educating Americans on the realities of system racism AND the overwhelming awesomeness of Black people.

Wakanda Forever Month

In this scenario, we just spend all of February rehashing our favorite parts of Black Panther and remembering Chadwick Boseman.

So, what are you going to do this February? How will you recognize this extra short month dedicated to honoring Black history? I hope my sentiments don’t make you feel like you should ignore Black History Month celebrations. On the contrary. I hope you do, I just hope you continue to celebrate and honor them for the other 11 months of the year as well. Be like me and make every month Black History month in your home too.
