Allende's Long Petal of the Sea Review
A Long Petal of the Sea is an epic historical love story.

I just finished reading the latest offering by Isabel Allende. Perfect for these current times, A Long Petal of the Sea is about two people who have to flee not one, but two fascist regimes over their lifetimes. First it’s Franco’s Spain, followed by Pinochet’s Chile. It’s a love story and a historical drama. It’s beautifully written in Allende’s lyrical, yet precise language and the epic journey the two main characters experience feels almost otherworldly. It’s not quite magical realism, and yet, there is something magical that keeps the two main characters alive and in love throughout their tumultuous journey around the world. The best part is that while reading this engaging and enchanting story, you’re also getting an important education about Spanish and Latin American history, a lesson we all need to be aware of given the current global circumstances.

Let Your Kids Watch This

Babygirl discovered The InBESTigators on Netflix and she loves it! It’s about four school-aged kid detectives and the mysteries they solve at their elementary school. It’s quite innocent but pokes fun at the mockumentary style shows that have become increasingly popular in adult programming. Fun fact, this is an Australian show so your kids will learn what daily life is like for children down under and the cast is nicely multicultural.

If you don’t want to feel bad about your endless scrolling on Instagram, try following @Tayo Rockson and feel better about your social media consumption. Tayo is a diversity and inclusion expert originally from Nigeria. As a diplomat’s kid, he grew up all over the world and landed in the United States for college. He is the author of the book, Use Your Difference to Make a Difference and he uses his social media platforms to inspire and educate people about diversity and inclusion, as well as anti-racism work anyone can do. Thanks to the #Rona, he’s been creating fantastic additional programing on IG and you can always depend on him for an inspirational dance break. I guarantee he’ll put a smile on your face even while he’s teaching your something important.

Cook Something from this IG Account

@TastyJapan will have you excited about dinner again. Or lunch. Or a snack. Many of these recipes will have you rethink what you thought you knew about Japanese food, but that’s a good thing, right? Babygirl and I have tried one recipe far (the stuffed eggplant) and it turned out great. We’ll probably try something new this weekend. But even if you don’t actually take TastyJapan into your kitchen, it’s also just fun to watch the videos.
