Happy Earth Day, Meltingpot Community!
Despite the fact that we are in the middle of an unprecedented global pandemic, I bet the Earth is pretty happy on this Earth Day. After all, the entire world has slowed down its relentless production cycles, which in turn has reduced the amount of pollution in our air, land and seas.
Listen to Your Mother (Earth)
I can’t help but think that Mother Earth is secretly smiling at us mere mortals as we try to get a handle on the Corona virus, while she is finally able to grab a breath of fresh air. I love seeing the news articles that are showing the places around the globe where Mother Nature is reclaiming her territory. From lions lounging on the streets of South Africa, to the waterways in Venice running clear for the first time in years.
But, this temporary pause in our daily destruction of the Earth, isn’t going to do anything significant to the serious shit show we’re heading for if we don’t get a handle on the ways we are all contributing to climate change and likewise what we can do collectively to reverse course.
The Connection Between Climate Change and Racism
My good friend Eileen Flanagan, wrote this powerful essay about the connection between racism and climate change here on the Meltingpot last year. I think now is the perfect time to revisit her words and her message, particularly because there is also an opportunity for economic growth in impoverished communities when we talk about inequality and climate change. And as we tumble into a global recession/depression, coming up with new financial frameworks is also really going to be important.
Please take a moment to read Eileen’s very relevant essay and check out her website so you can begin to be part of the change we need to save our Earth.
Peace & Happy Earth Day!
