Episode 33 is a Meltingpot Minute episode where I’m sharing some tips and suggestions on how to be a Meltingpot Mom during a global pandemic. Think of this a multicultural resource guide for parenting during the Corona crisis.
As mothers during these unprecedented times of social isolation, lockdown, fear and homeschooling(!!!), we are tasked with not only managing the worries and concerns of our children, we also have to keep them safely occupied, and supposedly teach them things that they will eventually need to be successful members of society.
I don’t have any downloadable worksheets, nor am I going to suggest you do anything that would require you or your children to get dressed before noon. No, my easy tips and no-stress suggestions are for ways you can bring some multicultural magic and sprinkles of diversity into your current lockdown lifestyle as a parent.
How to be a Meltingpot Mama during a Global Pandemic:
On the podcast, I share the following ideas and resources for parenting through Corona 2020
Learn a New Language
Don’t aim for fluency, just have fun using apps like Duolingo, podcasts, YouTube and Netflix.
Make Cooking a MultiCultural Experience
Invite your kids into the kitchen to cook and make multicultural magic. The trick is to use easy recipes and secret ingredients. For more recipes and ideas on how to work with your kids in the kitchen, check out last week’s podcast guest, Karen Ricks and her online cooking school, Our Kitchen Classroom.
Buy a Book
Since we’re not buying a whole lot of other things right now and since books never go out of style, buy some new titles for your kids with multicultural themes. Amazon may not be delivering books anymore, but Bookshop.org is and they give a percentage of all of their profits to indie bookstores.
Subscribe to Monthly Fun
And speaking of spending, it might be worth your while moms, to invest in a subscription service, like Universal Yums, or Little Passports that deliver treats and activities for your kids once a month.
Press Play on Podcasts
There are some great podcasts for kids with a multicultural message – Try Animal Sound Safari, Molly of Denali, and Circle Round
Pick A Country
Make geography an ongoing lesson with easy items you already have at home.
Join the Global Rainbow Challenge
Have your kids join the thousands around the world spreading hope through colorful art.
For more details on all of these ideas, tune into the podcast! If you have more suggestions and/or resources for multicultural parenting during the Corona crisis, please share them below so that we all can benefit.
