Meltingpot News to “Spice Up Your Life”

Hello Meltingpot Community,

I’m a day late, but not a dollar short.

There’s so much meltingpot news to share, I had trouble narrowing down my picks for this week, but here they are. From Forever stamps to the Facts of Life, this week’s stories are sure to spice up your life.

Meltingpot News to Spice Up Your Life

Chinese Hollywood: What do you know about the Chinese experience in Hollywood? If it’s not much, don’t worry, a new coffee table book is out that shares over one hundred years of history, called, Hollywood Chinese: The Chinese in American Feature Films. It sounds fascinating and necessary.

Gwen Ifill Gets a Forever Stamp: Powerhouse journalist, Gwen Ifill, who died way too soon from cancer in 2016 has been immortalized with a Forever Stamp. Way to go US Postal system. I’m sorry I ever said bad things about you when I had to stand in line forever to mail a package.

Passing Gets the Hollywood Treatment: As a woman who spent the better part of three years deeply engrossed in the study of colorism and subsequently the act of passing, I am so excited to see Nella Larsen’s novel, Passing, get the Hollywood treatment with such a stellar cast of actors. If you haven’t read the book already, do so before the movie comes out.

A Native Podcast for Young Listeners: Just in time for Thanksgiving, instead of sharing the traditional, grossly incorrect stories of happy Indians and grateful pilgrims with your kids, why not plug into this new podcast for young listeners called Molly of Denali. Molly is an Alaska Native with a detective’s heart who has adventures all across Alaska. The voices on the podcast are all Native actors, as are the writers and production crew. Score one for representation!

Facts of Life Reboot on Lifetime: Okay, to be clear, Lifetime is not hosting a Facts of Life reunion, although in this new holiday movie, You Light Up My Christmas, all of the original stars from The Facts of Life are set to appear. I’m there for it, but I just hope Kim Fields’ character is named Tootie!

Penzeys is Offering the Spice of Life:  Who ever said you couldn’t mix spices with politics? Whoever said it was wrong, because as of last week, Penzeys spice company was leading the pack in buying the most impeachment ads on Facebook. In case you didn’t know, Penzeys is a family-owned spice company from my home state of Wisconsin. Again, just in time for the holidays, pick up some Penzeys for your holiday meals so you can say you helped in the fight for justice…and impeachment.
