The Other Americans

MAMP Fall Book Club Pick: The Other Americans by Laila Lalami

Hello Meltingpot Readers.

I am so absolutely thrilled to announce the next selection for the My American Meltingpot Book Club. If you recall, in the MAMP book club:

The My American Meltingpot Book ClubWe read books by authors of diverse ethnic and cultural backgrounds who tell stories that explore cross-cultural connections. Books are selected because of the quality of the writing, the uniqueness of the story told and the possibility for a transformative experience after reading. Both fiction and nonfiction titles will be selected.”

This September we will be reading The Other Americans by Laila Lalami. The story begins with the suspicious death of one man. The man is a Moroccan immigrant who has built a successful life for himself and his family in California. From the jacket copy, The Other Americans is described as ” …at once a family saga, a murder mystery, and a love story, informed by the treacherous fault lines of American culture.” And that’s why it’s so good. Not only do we have drama, romance and a mystery, the story is told through the voices of multiple characters – all from different ethnic and racial backgrounds –  who were all impacted by this one man’s death.

If you are a fan of The Meltingpot, you will love this book! Laila Lalami is a brilliant author who knows how to write compelling characters from all walks of life. In The Other Americans, she has also tapped into our current crisis over who belongs in this country. It is so timely and so well told. But you don’t have to take it from me. Read the book for yourself. Join the MAMP virtual book club on Facebook (Ask to join the private MAMP community on our Facebook Page) and let’s talk about it!

Peace!
