#FlashbackFriday: That Time I Bought a Vitamix

Hello Meltingpot Readers,

I’ve been blogging for more than a decade, which means not only do I have a lot of content stored up, it means I have a digital scrapbook chronicling some of the most important moments of my life. Buying a Vitamix wasn’t exactly one of those moments, but at the time, it felt significant, so I wrote about it here on the Meltingpot exactly six years ago.

It’s fun to look back and see what I was thinking about, how I was parenting, who I was obsessing over in the pop culture landscape. And thanks to this post, I now remember how obsessed I was with buying a Vitamix. I would literally hang out at department stores just to watch the Vitamix demonstrations and taste the samples. (sad but true)  I was sure a Vitamix would change our lives, make us eat healthier, make meals faster and just basically revolutionize our home life.

Not Quite What I Expected

That’s not exactly what happened.

Vitamix Family
We use the Vitamix to make Gazpacho all summer long.

The Vitamix did not make us eat healthier because we pretty much eat healthy already. It also didn’t really cut down on time spent in the kitchen. At all. But I am happy to report that six years later, we’re still happily using our Vitamix. It did not land in the graveyard of useless kitchen tools and it still works like a charm. And as I predicted in that post those many years ago, the thing we use the Vitamix the most for … is gazpacho. It used to take el esposo almost an hour to make gazpacho – chopping all the vegetables, then pulverizing everything with a hand blender, then straining out the tomato and cucumber seeds and mixing again. Quite honestly, it didn’t seem worth the trouble. Now, with the Vitamix, everything just gets thrown in the container in big chunks, and five minutes later, we’re drinking smooth, refreshing gazpacho. The Vitamix literally pulverizes the seeds into oblivion, so no straining required. So, maybe that is a minor revolution because now we drink gazpacho all the time.

A Milkshake is Just a Smoothie with Ice Cream, Right?

I also use the Vitamix to make pesto, homemade hummus, and the kids love making milkshakes. When I was doing the Whole 30 diet, I also used the Vitamix to make the batter for my almond meal pancakes. So, not exactly the healthy green smoothies or fresh vegetable soups I imagined myself creating six years ago, but I’m okay with that. I’m just really happy that after all the planning and saving we did to buy this machine, we’re still using it six years later. I definitely think it was worth the investment.

So, what about you? Are you a Vitamix family? What do you use it for?

Peace!
