Five Great Diverse Young Readers Series

Hello Meltingpot Readers,

It goes without saying that I love reading. And I’ve tried to instill a similar love of literature in all three of my kids. So far, I think I’ve done a pretty good job, judging from the amount of books both of my teen boys consume on a weekly basis.

These days, however, I’m on the hunt for good young-readers series for babygirl, who is seven and isn’t a very confident reader yet. She still prefers books with pictures, but she’s ready for chapter books with more complex story lines. Of course, as her meltingpot mom, I want to find books that feature protagonists of color in diverse contexts, that may or may not also feature a unicorn in the storyline.

Here are five, great, young-readers series that both babygirl and I love because they feature characters of color, the storylines are unique and fun, and the writing is accessible but doesn’t feel too immature.

King and Kayla

King is a golden retriever. Kayla is his human. She also happens to be a smart little Black girl who likes to solve mysteries.
Why We Love It: These stories are narrated by King and he’s a very funny dog. The mysteries presented are just right for young problem solvers.

Yasmin

Yasmin is a Pakistani-American girl who is game to try any type of adventure.
Why We Love It: Yasmin is a spirited, adventurous girl, plus we learn about Pakistani language and culture. Also, the  full-color illustrations are fun and add an an extra dimension to Yasmin’s tales.

Princess Pink and the Land of Fake Believe

Princess Pink hates the color pink but she likes karate. This graphic novel style series is one of the few comics we’ve found that features a Black female main character –with pink hair–that has nothing to do with superheroes. It’s really funny and makes fun of  fairy tale tropes.
Why We Love It: It’s a great concept and hilariously executed.

Diverse Young Readers SeriesJada Jones

Jada Jones is a science-loving girl with an endearing personality. Sometimes she finds science more reliable than friends, so she’s a Black-girl nerd in the making. A girl so many of us can relate to and love.
Why We Love It: The language is easy to read, but the stories are really meaningful and dynamic. Plus, Jada makes science sound really fun.

Katie Woo

Katie Woo is a spunky 1st grade heroine who reminds me of Ramona the Pest. Except she’s Asian American. There are more than 20 books in this series and each one features a cast of diverse characters.
Why We Love It: Katie Woo is a boss and is full of self confidence.

What books would you add to this list, dear readers? I’m always looking for something new to read with babygirl!

Peace!

  1. I just used this list for my school’s Parents of Children of Color group. We’re collecting reading resources for the kids and I added all of these titles to our list! Super helpful! Thank you for compiling.
