ICYMI: SNL Finds Humor in Race and Pop Culture

Hello Meltingpot Readers,

True confession, I don’t have time to watch television on a regular basis. Usually I catch up on the latest shows from social media coverage. I think of Twitter and Facebook as my Cliffs Notes for pop culture. So, I’m keeping up, just not in the traditional way. And please know, I take my role as informant for all things meltingpot very seriously. I stay informed so I can pass that information on to you.

And here’s what I want to share; Saturday Night Live has found the humor in race, identity and cultural mash-ups. It makes my Meltingpot soul sing. I’m not saying that the cast of SNL has done anything revolutionary, I’m just saying it’s both hilarious and affirming to see a pop culture icon like Saturday Night Live, delve into the topics that I write, research and talk about every day. Wouldn’t you agree?

Here are two recent skits that demonstrate what I’m talking about.

A Woke White Boy

First, it’s the “Cha Cha Slide,” it’s a spoof on Black/White Interracial relationships.

Hollywood Humor

The second one is called “Can I Play That?” and touches on a lot of different issues around colorblind casting, colorism, cultural appropriation, sexism and political correctness in Hollywood. Plus, they manage to skewer Twitter in the process. I think this is one of the funniest, meltingpot sketches I’ve seen. I could write an entire thesis about this sketch, but I won’t. I’ll probably just keep watching it and talking about it with anyone who will listen.

What do you think dear readers? Is this comedy worth commenting on? What do you think? Has SNL realized that there is humor to be found in the issues we face on the daily? Let me know what you think? I’m totally listening.

Peace.

  1. Oh my goodness, this is SO my life right now!!! This is *definitely* comedy worthy of a lengthy thesis! If I couldn’t laugh at the absurdity these days, I’d be drowning in a tidal wave of tears. As someone who enjoys getting her news filtered through the laugh factory at Comedy Central with Trevor Noah, I really appreciate the humor with which these brilliant actors are serving up their scathing social commentary.

      Karen,
I agree with you 100%. Trevor Noah is my favorite newscaster!
      Thanks for visiting the Meltngpot.

  2. My favorite part of the Cha Cha Slide is the extra church fan! Thanks for the clips. I wrote posts about interesting Afro-Mexican history recently. #diversity -Rebecca

      Rebecca,
LOL! I loved the church fan part too. I have to check out the Afro-Mexican history post because I just saw a photo exhibit on that community. Synergy!
