Hello Meltingpot Readers,
Today’s Friday Favorite is Priyanka Chopra on the cover of the January 2019 edition of Vogue magazine. Here’s why:
- Anytime a beautiful woman of color graces the cover of Vogue magazine is a win in my book. (#RepresentationMatters!) And Priyanka Chopra is so gorgeous, this cover made me swoon.
- I’m not going to lie, I’m fascinated/confused/amused by Chopra’s recent marriage to Nick Jonas. I want the deets behind this May-December love story. I mean, she’s a 36-year-old Indian superstar and he’s a 26-year-old former Disney star/musician/actor. It’s a Meltingpot marriage, but so unexpected. (Yes, I bought the magazine to learn more. You can read the same article for free on Vogue’s website. )
- There are several other stories in this issue of the magazine I totally want to read; there’s the personal essay on being a casual Catholic; a fashion spread based on the James Baldwin book and film, If Beale Street Could Talk, and a trend piece on young women flaunting their body hair. It’s a slim edition, but there’s literally something of interest on almost every page. And I don’t even care about fashion!
Dear readers, I love magazines. I think they are such perfect packages of pop culture. When a mainstream magazine like Vogue does a good job at multicultural representation in both words and images, I’m a happy consumer. Is Vogue perfect? Of course not. Look at the dreadful headline under Chopra’s name for heaven’s sake (…Landing the Man of Her Dreams. Ugh). But I will give credit where credit is due.
Any Vogue fans out there? Tell me what you like about the magazine? Or what other magazines do you think gets representation right? I’m totally listening and taking notes.
Peace!
