Decolonizing My Lasagna: An Ethiopian Explains

Hello Meltingpot Readers,

The Nod is a podcast about Black culture
The podcast about Black culture from Blackness’s biggest fans.
I’ve already proclaimed my great love for The Nod podcast. I’ve blogged about The Nod, I listen to the show faithfully, and basically tell everybody I know that they should listen to the show that’s “all about Blackness.” And why is it that I love The Nod so much? Because every time I listen to an episode, I learn something new. From Black dolls to Black freedom fighters, the subject matter on that show takes Black culture to places I never even thought of. Like lasagna.

Yesterday I listened to an episode of The Nod that asked the question; What is the Blackest food you can think of? One woman’s answer was lasagna. In what world is lasagna considered Black, you’re wondering? I’ll tell you. When your world is that of an Ethiopian-American who grew up eating “decolonized lasagna,” that is, lasagna that your Black ancestors reclaimed from the invading Italians who tried to colonize your country.

Not only is this story of decolonized lasagna a fascinating one, but the recipe for Ethiopian lasagna that was shared on the show has got me ready to pull out my dutch oven and get cooking. Of course, I’ll probably have to head into the city to try to find some authentic Ethiopian berbere spice blend first.

Don’t take my word for it. Listen to the episode and then come back and tell me what you think. Also, tell me if you too decide to try to make Ethiopian lasagna. I’ll post a picture of mine on Instagram when I make it.

Peace!
