Princess Tiana a survivor of Hollywood colorism

This Just In: Disney Gives Princess Tiana Her Black Back

Hello Meltingpot Readers,

I knew you were all waiting on the edge of your seats, wondering if Disney was going to do something in response to the public uproar over the whitewashing of Princess Tiana (and Pocahontas) in their upcoming movie, Wreck-It Ralph 2. I posted here a few weeks ago about the troubling image of Tiana – she had lighter skin, loosely curled hair, a different nose – in the movie’s trailer. It seemed like the original Tiana had been replaced with her biracial cousin in a total Fresh Prince of Bel-Air Aunt Viv move and Black Twitter wasn’t having it.

Well, I’m happy to report that Disney heard us and has restored Tiana’s melanin levels to their original state, fixed her hair and gave her her nose back. In other words, she’s back to Black. Of course, we all know that Black comes in all shades and hair textures and I’m the first person to claim all the Biracials as Black, but if Tiana was basic Black in her original role, there’s no reason for that to change – except for white supremacy taking over the helm of Disney Studios.

So, thank you Disney for listening and fixing your mistake. It’s actions like this that give me hope and prove that our words and our protests have power.

To read the details about how Tiana got her melanin back, check out the full story in Animation magazine.

Peace!

(Image above is a screen grab from the latest Wreck-It Ralph2 trailer. Tiana is clearly back to Black.)

Thanks, Rebecca. I’m thrilled Disney listened and did something about it!
And I’ll look into the comments section here.

  2. Yay! I have been waiting to hear this great news. Representation matters, in cartoons as in life. Meghan is a royal real life example, I liked your post on her charity cookbook.
