The Colorism Chronicles Episode #2: Anthony Dickey on the True “Color of Beauty”

Hello Meltingpot Readers,

It’s time for this week’s installment of The Colorism Chronicles, my video project on colorism and skin color politics in the American family. In today’s episode, you’ll meet world-famous hairstylist, salon owner and founder of Hair Rules hair products, Anthony Dickey. Dickey, as he’s known, was kind enough to share his memories about growing up as a light-skinned, red-haired, biracial child in a Black family. What he learned and experienced as a child about color and race, heavily influenced his future career in the beauty industry. Dickey has always talked about hair textures instead of limiting categories like Black hair and white hair. Therefore his salons have always been these multicultural, meltingpot meccas where women of all ethnic backgrounds can come for superior haircare. Clearly this man understands race and identity and color on a totally higher level. Check out his story and let me know what you think.

Peace!
