Hello Meltingpot Readers,
Today is Friday so that means I get to share something that makes me smile and today that something is Fried Chicken and Latkes. Not literally (although fried chicken and potato pancakes sounds like a winning combination to me), I’m talking about Rain Pryor’s fabulous, award-winning, one-woman show about growing about Black and Jewish, or Blewish if you’d prefer. Pryor covers food (obviously), hair, accents and the awkwardness of growing up between two colors and cultures. It’s all in the show and the result is equal parts hilarious and heart-wrenching.
Pryor, if you didn’t know, is the daughter of the comedian, Richard Pryor and she’s clearly inherited the humor gene but she’s also a committed social activist who uses her art to bring about social change around the issues of race and identity. Now, the famous TV producer Norman Lear – the man responsible for All in the Family and The Jeffersons – is going to be adapting Fried Chicken and Latkes for television. Pryor will be writing.
You can read all the deets about the deal in the Hollywood Reporter. And here’s a clip (of course it’s going to be about hair!) from Fried Chicken and Latkes, the live show, to whet your appetite. While you watch that, I think I’m going to go see if I can whip up some fried chicken and latkes for dinner tonight. I’m hungry!
Kudos to Rain Pryor. I can’t wait to see the new show!
Peace!
