Greatest Hits from MAMP: Black hair, Black Amish and Black People Adopting White Children

Hello Meltingpot Readers,

In honor of my blog-a-versary, which was yesterday, I decided to take a trip down memory lane to see what kind of blog posts attracted the most attention. Since I’ve always written about a wide range of subjects under the umbrella of race and culture and because I never utilized any SEO hocus-pocus, I didn’t know what issues would attract more readers and that was never really my motivation either. I started the blog to write about what I thought was important or interesting enough to share. And now looking back, it’s just really fascinating to see what posts garnered the most page views and comments. Turns out, dear readers, you are just as eclectic, quirky and curious as I am about this meltingpot world we live in.

Once upon a time, this was the logo for The Meltingpot.

So without further ado, here are the top five most read posts from the My American Meltingpot archives: *drumroll*

  1. When Black People Adopt White Children –  This post wasn’t just about any average Black person adopting white kids, it was about megachurch pastor, Creflo Dollar and his adopted white son.
  2. Is Gypsy a Racist Word? – Turns out, yes it is. And many people from the Roma community left comments to explain the history and nuance with this troublesome word.
  3. Black and Amish – Guess what, this was a misnomer in the headline. It should have been Black and Mennonite, but we blog, we learn.
  4. Black Hair Rule #1: Don’t Cut a Baby’s Hair Until Age One! – Of course Black hair issues are going to make the list. They always do.
  5. Who Are You Calling Oriental?: I asked the question why “Oriental” is a term used in the UK to describe Asian people but not in the US, discussion ensued.

Is there a theme here, dear readers? Do you want to hear more about reverse transracial adoption, or Black hair myths? Maybe I should just take this list as proof that my natural curiosity and interests are what made my blog great in the past and I should just keep my following my instincts. Yeah, I’m going to go with that takeaway.

Do you have a favorite post from the Meltingpot? I’d love to know what it was about. Thanks in advance.

Peace!
