Creative Writing for BIPOC writers

Come Write with Me: I’m Teaching a Creative Writing Workshop for BIPOC Writers

Hello Meltingpot Community,

Read,Write and Create podcast art
The new Read, Write & Create podcast launched on January 9, 2023!

It’s been a minute since I’ve updated here lately because I’ve been busy launching my new creative writing platform, Read, Write, and Create. I hope if you’re interested in all things literary, with a multicultural twist, you’ve had a chance to check out the RWC blog and podcast. And now, I’m finally offering my first creative writing classes as a newly emancipated academic. This was always my dream and my plan once I moved to Spain, and now I’m finally putting my plans into action.

The Creative Writing Workshop

The first class I’m offering is a Creative Writing Workshop.

This Creative Writing Workshop is specifically for BIPOC writers who are looking to develop a regular creative writing habit, improve their creative writing skills, and share their work in a safe and supportive writing community. The class runs from April 15 – June 7.

If you are a:

  • New writer trying to find your niche

  • Journalist or an academic writer trying to transition into creative nonfiction or fiction

  • Blocked writer looking for a way to re-ignite your writing life

  • Good writer who wants to be a great writer

Then this is the workshop for you.

Classes will include a combination of writing instruction, creative writing practice, and sharing your work with the group. Writing exercises will offer students the opportunity to play with their words, and experiment with fiction, creative nonfiction, personal essay, and poetry. All classes will also include creative meditation inspired by the lives of our BIPOC literary ancestors.  Writers will finish the class with new work generated and a sustainable writing habit.

Classes are being held online and begin Saturday April 15 and run for seven weeks. To register for the Creative Writing Workshop, follow this Eventbrite link.

The Nonfiction Book Proposal

The other class I’m teaching takes place on May 7 and it is one-day workshop on Writing a Nonfiction Book Proposal. It is open to all writers.

If you want to get an agent and sell a nonfiction book to a mainstream publisher, you have to write a proposal first. And FYI, memoirs are considered nonfiction, so even if you’re writing a memoir, you need a proposal to sell it.

In this intensive workshop, I’ll give you the exact template I’ve used to craft nonfiction book proposals for myself and my clients. And FYI, the last two proposals I wrote netted my clients six and seven figure book deals respectively!

In the workshop I will:

  • Walk you through the Nonfiction Book Proposal Template.

  • Show you how to customize your nonfiction book proposal so it attracts agents and editors.

  • Break down the best practices in proposal writing.

  • Share my tips and tricks for writing the best market analysis for your proposal.

  • Walk you through the process of how to get an agent with your well-written proposal.

By the end of this intensive workshop, you will have a working outline for your very own nonfiction book proposal, as well as the roadmap to finding an agent and selling your book.

To register for the Nonfiction Proposal class, follow this Eventbrite link.

If you have any questions about the classes, please feel free leave a comment below or contact me via the contact page on this site. I hope to see some of you Meltingpot readers in class!
