I’m so excited to officially announce my first memoir writing workshop for BIPOC writers. I’ve obviously taught multiple writing workshops in the past – and I was a college writing professor for over a decade – but this will be the first of many writing workshops I will be offering as an independent creative writing teacher and coach. *throws confetti while executing a perfect backflip*
I am so thrilled to have this opportunity to share my passion for memoir writing and my skills as a teacher and motivator to creative writers looking for guidance. Because even though you may love writing, writing is hard. Moreover, writing a book takes an extraordinary amount of time and commitment. And writing a book about yourself adds an extra layer of complication, as you have to be willing to lay yourself bare on the page.
So, let’s find out if this workshop is for you.
Are You a BIPOC Writer with a Story to Tell?
Are you a writer of color who is ready to share your story?
Have you been dreaming about writing a memoir, but are unsure how to start, where to start, or how to make all of the ideas in your head make sense on the page?
Are you convinced that somebody out in the world will be healed and made well if they had a chance to read your story?
Does the idea of writing a full-length book manuscript scare you, but you are still committed to writing through your fear?
Then, now is the time to take my Memoir Workshop for BIPOC Writers.
About the Workshop
During this three-day, virtual, workshop intensive (Friday afternoon, Saturday and Sunday), students will learn how to identify the theme of their memoir, organize their memories into a logical order, and draft an outline they can use to start writing their full-length manuscript. This workshop will include short reading assignments; analysis of the structures of different memoirs; and generative writing exercises to help connect with memory and story. There will also be time allocated to demystifying the publishing process.
In addition, we will spend time on mindset and motivational techniques, rooted in the histories and traditions of African-American literary legends.
By the end of our time together, all participants will have the necessary blueprint to start and finish writing their memoir, plus the confidence, motivation, and mindset to see it through to completion.
This will be an intimate workshop with seats limited to 12 writers of color. Class size is deliberately kept small to ensure a safe and encouraging space to write and learn together in the spirit of community.
If this sounds like what you need to finally get your memoir out of your head and out into the world, please join us on Labor Day Weekend to do some literary work.
