MAMP Q&A: Diedre Anthony of “Are Those Your Kids?”

Hello Meltingpot Community,

It’s Monday and I have another Q&A with an amazing meltingpot mom and content creator.

Diedre Anthony is a school counselor, farmer’s wife, and mother to three biracial children. She resides in South Georgia and has an obsession for office supplies, curly hair products and shoes. On her blog Are Those Your Kids? , she touches on topics such as race, diversity, curly hair and motherhood.

I first “met” Diedre in the blogosphere because of her blog. As a Black mom with mixed-race kids who often pass as anything but my kids, I immediately knew I’d found a kindred spirit online.

Diedre also maintains a super active Facebook group called, Are Those Your Kids?: Navigating Multiracial Motherhood One Day at a Time. The group has well over 3,000 members and Diedre does an amazing job answering questions, creating a welcoming community and offering resources and ideas for mothers raising diverse families. And she always seems to be able to do with it a positive attitude.

So, I wanted to get to know Diedre a little better and thought you would too.

Meet Diedre Anthony

Ms. Meltingpot: Can you tell our community a little bit about yourself?

Diedre Anthony: My name is Diedre and I’ve been married to my husband for 10 years this December. We have three beautiful, biracial children ages 8, 5 & 1.5. My parents are Jamaican and I grew up on an Air Force Base, so diversity and culture have always been an interest of mine. I love learning about the places my friends traveled to and from. I’m a farmer’s wife and a school counselor by day, and blogger/writer in my “free” time.

MM: What’s the origin story for the Are those Your Kids? brand and what does it look like today?

DA: When my oldest daughter was born, she was fair skinned and people often made comments about her complexion and asked if she was mine. I took to Facebook to vent, and a friend encouraged me to blog about my experiences. I also had trouble finding products for her hair when her straight wavy hair became curly. I searched for help online, and I couldn’t believe the lack of resources, so I decided to be the resource that people like me were searching for.
Today my blog and brand has evolved into so much more! I discuss everything from wellness, to farm life, to education and motherhood. It’s been such a beautiful journey and allowed me to interact with the most interesting people!

MM:  What do you think the people who participate in the Are those Your Kids? community struggle with the most when it comes to anti-racism work and/or diversity? And how do you approach helping them?
DA: I’ve been so delighted to have parents who foster/adopt join the journey with me. Many of them quickly get a crash course in race relations because they notice the discrimination against their children that they never had to experience. It is sometimes draining, but so fulfilling to help them through the journey. The challenge comes when others who think they have done all the work want to school those who they feel have inadequately done the work to understand the struggle of their minority spouse and/or children. Managing personalities is the hardest part as my group grows in size, but as a certified professional school counselor, I’m up for the challenge!

MM: What inspires you to do the work you do?  How do you stay inspired?

DA: When I look at the work around me and see that we still have so much work to do, it inspires me to dig my heels in deep and keep having those tough conversations. My children and other minority children need me and others to keep having these conversations.

As a Black woman, I wish we had more conversations like this when I was a kid. I remember being infatuated with Black celebrities like Tyra Banks simply because they looked like me. It’s so important for kids to have advocates and racial mirrors, so the conversations need to keep happening.

MM: What are you most proud of doing, creating or accomplishing as it relates to Are those Your Kids?

DA: I’ve always wanted to be a writer, so seeing my name online through various freelancing projects is fulfilling.

I also love when people send me private messages and let me know how the conversations help them, even when they are difficult conversations. My heart is for loving on and helping people and Are Those Your Kids? helps me do just that–touch people all over the world.

MM: What’s your favorite ice cream flavor? (Always want to end on a sweet note!)

DA: Pistachio almond hands down!

Okay, first of all, pistachio almond ice cream sounds delicious. Second of all, I’m so glad I got to learn more about Diedre. I hope you are too. If you’d like to see what she’s doing in cyberspace, check out all of her accounts on social media and of course, the Are Those Your Kids blog.
