Diverse News Digest: Black hair, White Babies and IKEA

Hello Meltingpot Readers,

Are you ready for your weekly dose of diverse news? This week’s news stories don’t disappoint when it comes to diversity. You may be enraged or inspired by what you read here, but you will most definitely be informed about what is keeping our world colorful. Enjoy!

Dreadlocks on the Mat

Remember the story of the teen wrestler from New Jersey who was forced to get his dredlocks hacked off in the middle of a match or else forfeit the tournament? Well, here’s what really happened and a deeply reported article about where that young man is today. Trust, when it comes to Black hair in American, there’s always more to the story.

IKEA Gets Dragged for Not Understanding Jamaican Cuisine

Diverse News from Ikea
Can you spot what’s wrong with Ikea’s version of Jamaican rice and peas? Hint: It’s the peas

Maybe Swedish retailer IKEA should stick to furniture and stay away from trying to offer international cuisine in their cafeterias because they got this popular Jamaican dish wrong and people weren’t having it.

White Couple Gives Birth to Asian Baby!

While this sounds like tabloid fodder, it did actually happen after a fertility clinic inseminated a White woman with an Asian man’s sperm, instead of her husband’s. That is no bueno. The couple has since divorced due to the stress of the situation, and they are suing the fertility clinic. Welcome to the 21st century.

In Honor of Hispanic Heritage Month …

You don’t really need a reason to read books by Latinx authors, but since Hispanic Heritage Month just began on September 15, here’s a great excuse to dive into this great list of Latinx must-reads. I love this list because it shows how these titles can offer the same type of universal life lessons and exquisite writing as the so-called classics written by white men.

When Black People Adopt White Children (redux)

To this day, one of my most visited blog posts was the one when I wrote about Black people adopting white children. For some reason, that really struck a chord with my readers. Well, here’s another Black family that has adopted a white child and they have all the stories and experiences – including having people accuse them of stealing their child – one would expect in a society that still believes families have to match. But they don’t seem to mind because love, not blood, makes a family.

What stories have caught your attention this week, dear readers? Please share if you’re so inclined.

Peace!

  1. Thanks for the great news roundup. Drew’s full story is quite moving, about how his race and hair identity was challenged during a match and the ref made it about “rules”, when I understand Drew was not breaking any. I look forward to the list of Latinx reads. Gracias, Rebecca

Thanks! And I agree, that was a really good story that filled in a lot of the missing pieces!

Extremely interesting. Thanks for the Latinx book list and the story about Princeton’s adoption. I too paused a little when i first read black family adopts white baby but when I read the story if made a lot of sense. Adopting is falling in love, hopefully, and love just happens.

      Jane,
You’re welcome for the book list. And agreed. In this case of transracial adoption, it does seem that love might just be enough.
