Hello Meltingpot Readers,
It’s officially December, the last month of the year. That means it’s time for people to start making those “The Year that Was” lists. They’re going to look at all of the major milestones and big moments from the last 11 months and try to figure out what 2018 was all about. Well, I already have it figured out; Blackness! Two thousand eighteen was the year that Black people showed up, showed out and dominated American popular culture.
Black Culture Ruled in 2018
You need proof? Check the receipts.
Black Movies
The Top Grossing Movie of 2018 was Black Panther: It was super Black. Super Influential. Black Panther II is already in the works. Wakanda Forever!
Black Music
Kendrick Lamar Wins the Pulitzer Prize for music with his album DAMN. A first for a hip-hop album. The Pulitzer judges called DAMN… “a virtuosic song collection unified by its vernacular authenticity and rhythmic dynamism that offers affecting vignettes capturing the complexity of modern African-American life.”
Black Books
First Lady, Michelle Obama releases her memoir, Becoming on November 13, 2018 and it’s already the best-selling book of the year! Two million copies sold like that.
Black People in Politics
Although they didn’t win, both Stacey Abrams and Andrew Gillum ran such inspirational campaigns for governor in their respective states of Georgia and Florida, they received national news coverage, international acclaim, scared a lot of so-called Republicans and arguably were the real winners in the 2018 midterm election cycle.
And speaking of politics, Black women just held it down everywhere in the political arena. Literally, everywhere.
Black Queens
Meghan Markle single-handedly brought Blackness to the British Royal family when she married Prince Harry in May, 2018. Not only did she marry into the family with her Black American bloodlines, she brought a gospel choir, her mama and Bishop Michael Curry to the wedding to make sure Blackness was on full display.
Black Culture Made America Great Again in 2018
There are clearly even more examples of Black people doing super cool, highly influential, Blackety Black things that made 2018 great, but I’m going to end my list here because I think I made my point.
Looking back at the year that was, from pop culture to politics, Black people made America great again.
Peace!

The book is better because it could go into more depth, has more characters and details. It reads like a screenplay; it’s amazing to think how brave Ron was to pull the whole card carrying member bit off! The movie is more dramatic because Spike Lee knows how to pack a punch in his films. -Rebecca
I look forward to reading Michelle Obama’s memoir. Another great moment this year was when Ron Stallworth’s memoir was made into a major movie directed by Spike Lee! Check out my book review if you have a moment 🙂 Gracias, Rebecca
Rebecca,
I checked Ron’s book out of the library but never got to read it. My son did though! I want to read it before seeing the movie. Did you see the movie too? Which was better in your opinion?
