Friday Favorites: The Nod Podcast

Hello Meltingpot Readers,

It’s Friday, that means I get to share one of my favorite things. And today that favorite thing is a podcast. Now, I’m going to be honest. I’m a little late to the podcast game. I didn’t start listening to podcasts until recently and I’m still trying to catch up and find my podcast groove. Thanks to all of my recent road trips, though, I’ve had the opportunity to listen to a buttload of podcasts and really discover what I like and don’t like. Not surprisingly, I like podcasts that delve into issues of race and pop culture. I like podcasts where the hosts are there to bring you new and interesting information, not simply listen to themselves opine on the latest movie or pop culture phenomenon. That being said, I like it when the hosts have an engaging personality with just the right amount of humor and smarts. And that’s why I love, The Nod. And when I say love, I mean love, love, love! There seriously hasn’t been an episode that I haven’t enjoyed. I’ve even listened to a few episodes twice.

First off, here’s what The Nod is all about. From their website:

The Nod tells the stories of Black life that don’t get told anywhere else. Our show ranges from an explanation of purple drink’s association with Black culture to the story of an interracial drag troupe that traveled the nation in the 1940s. We celebrate the genius, the innovation, and the resilience that is so particular to being Black — in America, and around the world.

The genius about The Nod is that “Black Life” offers an endless amount of stories – from the serious to the super silly – to tell. I’ve listened to episodes with topics that range from Josephine Baker’s rainbow coalition of children, to a profile of a self-taught chef selling “Black tacos” on the streets of LA.( Of course you want to know, what are “Black tacos.” Go listen to the episode.) Most recently, I learned about a group of armed Black men who called themselves The Deacons who protected Black people throughout the Civil Rights movement from the Ku Klux Klan. (Yes, child, from the KKK!)

I literally finish every episode inspired and incredulous. Feeling like I really learned something. Ready to tell somebody, “Hey, did you know…?”

Now, I’m ready to tell you, dear readers. Check out The Nod.

I can only imagine with the millions of other podcasts competing for a loyal audience, The Nod would appreciate some more listeners. Do yourself a favor and go download an episode and tell a friend because sharing is caring.

You can thank me later.

Have a great weekend!

Peace!
