Hello Meltingpot Readers,
Pardon my absence yesterday, but I figured you wouldn’t mind the delay because it’s Loving Day!!! In my world, Loving Day qualifies as a day of celebration because it’s the day the Supreme Court struck down all anti-miscegenation laws, making it legal to marry across racial and ethnic lines in all 50 states. It seems kind of crazy that the Supreme Court had to get involved in domestic affairs of the heart, but this is America where we like to make everything about race complicated and unnecessarily vicious.
I think it’s great that Loving Day has become “a thing” and it is being celebrated in a myriad of ways all over the world. I’ve been writing about Loving Day for the last few years here on My American Meltingpot, because what’s more meltingpot than interracial marriages and families? Right?!
In 2013 I wrote about the new Loving Documentary.
In 2015 I wrote about Mat Johnson’s fantastic novel, Loving Day.
In 2018 I wrote about the docu-series The Loving Generation.
And then there’s this wonderful podcast series – The Loving Project – I participated in last year commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Loving Decision. It’s a wonderful series of interviews with interracial couples. FYI, el esposo and I are episode 10.
Today, I will be in Brooklyn, New York celebrating Loving Day at Geenlight Bookstore where I’ll be sharing the stage with some of the most stellar authors and content creators talking about race, identity and family dynamics across color lines. If you’re in the area, you should come through. The fun starts at 7:30pm.
What are you doing to celebrate Loving Day? Please share your stories in the comments.
Peace!
