Meltingpot News Round-Up

Hello Meltingpot Readers,

So many things are going on in the world, what’s a meltingpot maven to do to keep up? I know you don’t have time to scroll through hundreds of news sites and blogs to stay in the know, so here are some links to what I think are important and/or inspirational stories for your weekly meltingpot intake.

Hart-Break. The latest on the Hart Family mystery with more horrific evidence that this was a well-thought out murder, not an accident. These women are guilty of murder and the system that didn’t protect these kids has blood on their hands as well. So, is it the system or transracial adoption that needs revisiting?

Lauryn Hill Has Something to Celebrate. Believe it or not, 2018 marks the 20th anniversary of Lauryn Hill’s award-winning album The Mis-education of Lauryn Hill, and to celebrate she’s going on tour and performing all of the songs. Yes, all of the songs. The fact that that album is 20 years old, makes me feel really old, but it also makes me feel like I should go get tickets.

Well, Damn. Kendrick Lamar won a Pulitzer Prize for his latest album, Damn. He is the first rapper to win the award.

The How Not to Be Racist Class. After two Black men got arrested at a local Starbucks in Philly because they were sitting while Black, the CEO of the company decided to address the problem by having a company-wide racial bias class on May 29. I would love to see that syllabus.

Ali Wong, Superwoman. Ali Wong, the hilarious Asian-American stand-up comedian and mom, has a new special coming out on Netflix on Mother’s Day. If you haven’t seen her stand-up, you need to fix that right away.

Same Family, Different Colors on Roseanne. So, there’s been a lot of criticism of the Roseanne show reboot because Roseanne Barr is a proud Trump supporter, but did you also know, she’s the one who wanted to make sure there were more Black people on the show? In the new version, Roseanne’s son has a Black daughter, a fact that is hard to explain genetically because she should be biracial, but why quibble at progress? Is this progress, though? Stay tuned.
