#FridayFavorites: MTV’s Decoded and Diverse Beauty

Hi Meltingpot Readers,

Today is Friday so I’m sharing some of my favorites. Actually, today I just want to tell you about the web series, Decoded. It’s not that new so many of you might be thinking, Ms. Meltingpot is so behind, but please don’t judge. I’m not one of those people who is always on YouTube. I don’t even have the YouTube app on my phone, so I see most videos when people share them on Facebook. So, while I knew about Decoded when it first launched in 2015, I’ve only recently started paying attention to these bite-sized videos where “Franchesca Ramsey tackles race, pop culture, and other uncomfortable things, in funny and thought-provoking ways.” And you know what, some of these episodes are really good. Of course a few are just meh, but overall I think the series provides an easy way to start talking about some “uncomfortable things,” and many episodes also offer some really good information that you just might not know – like the origins of the word Caucasian. This week’s episode was one near and dear to my heart, it was about colorism in the Latinx community.

Here’s an episode I liked on White Beauty Standards and how these ubiquitous standards impact women of color, where women of color doesn’t just mean Black American women. Spoiler alert, hair and skin color get plenty of attention in this clip. Did/Do you struggle with white beauty standards? Feel like sharing in the comments? I’m listening.

Peace!
