Hi Meltingpot Readers,
By now you’ve probably heard of this incident that took place at a Walmart in Virginia. A White man was suspected of kidnapping three children because, well, he was White and the three girls he was with appeared to be Black. A witness alerted Walmart security of this peculiar arrangement saying quote, “they didn’t match up” and the next thing you know, police are at the front door of this man’s house questioning him and his connection to the girls. Turns out the White man is the father of the three girls. His wife is Black. I know, it’s shocking. I’m just shaking my head. Shaking my head.
You can read about it here. And shake your heads. And let that be a lesson to all of you with families like mine who don’t “match up.” Stay away from Walmart!
That is all.
Peace!

Maybe mixed families arent as common in that area? Where I lived in Florida, both Walmart and mixed families were pretty common. No one would have noticed there!
Okay, I replied before I read the article. Now I see it says Virginia has the highest rate of mixed couples? So maybe my theory is wrong. But obviously the person who was concerned certainly wasn’t very with the times!
Susan,
I don’t think there is a ‘reasonable’ explanation. Some people just don’t see families in different colors. If they don’t match, they don’t make sense. *sigh*
So how does Wal-Mart feel about white couples, in particular, adopting Asian children? Do they match up with the parents? Along the similar lines of not matching up, I just returned from NC. I went to my accountant’s office to pick up my tax returns. Since I live abroad, I have until June 15th to file. My accountant was aware that I was coming, but we had not set a specific date. I was in the area and just stopped by. I told the receptionist that I was there to pick up a package in my name ( didn’t feel that I needed to say tax retruns). Since my returns were not ready, she only saw the mail and asked me if I was there to pick up the outgoing mail. I was like NO! It told her my name three times before she understood why I was there. Of course when my accountant came to meet me she took me to the conference room. I guess I just did not match up in the eyes of the receptionist. SMH!!!!
Cyretha,
That is so ridiculous! Some people just can’t get past their own internal stereotypes of what people should look like. Sad but true.
I gave UP on Walmart…..
I gave on Walmart years ago. This nonsense only strengthens my resolve!
Yvonne,
I myself have only stepped into a Walmart once and resolved to never do it again. Ever!
